We believe that every individual client we serve deserves to take advantage of all opportunities available to become more successful, gain higher self-esteem, achieve independence, and be proud of all their achievements.
Consumers will be supported in exhibiting good grooming and hygiene habits.
Consumers will have the opportunity to learn the following daily living skills: Menu planning, shopping, and cooking Operating kitchen appliances (stove, oven, microwave, toaster, etc.)
As desired, consumers will have the opportunity to learn to budget money for groceries, to pay bills, personal items, household items and other expenses. In addition, consumers will be supported in establishing and keeping a balanced bank account (write checks, initiate deposits, etc.)
Mobility Training will be provided as needed:
Consumers will have unlimited access for traveling to and from their desired destination.
Consumers will learn to access wheelchair lifts and learn how to use the bus schedule.
Consumers will also be assisted and trained in community safety and pedestrian rules.
Consumers will have the opportunity to sign up for Special Olympics and other recreational organizations that involve bowling, skiing, hockey, ice skating, swimming, bicycling, baseball, basketball, etc.), ROP services including arts and craft, computers, physical fitness, etc. Other activities such as dances, picnics, holiday parties, museums tours, amusement parks, etc., will also be available.
Consumers will have on-going access to medical, dental, and therapeutic services. During these visits, consumers will be accompanied by their SLS support coach. Consumers will be educated about their doctor visits and purpose and side-effect of prescribed medications.
It is our belief that self advocacy is all about empowering our consumers to take control of their own lives. As desired, our consumers will be trained in the following areas: voting, personal rights and responsibilities as a citizen, appropriate communication skills (verbal/non-verbal), appropriate decision making, and on-going training on different type of abuses such as sexual, physical, emotional, verbal, economical,, etc.
One on one involvement to recognize areas of strengths and weaknesses. Individualized plans are implemented based on consumers expressed desired goals in the planning process.
